Closing an Old Year - Beginning a New One

Here are the videos made from 2015/2016's final project for 5th Grade.  Students modeled their own poems after the template mirroring George Ella Lyon's poem - Where I'm From.  They did a magnificent job!  I'm certain the students who are with me this year will do amazing things as well.  Once I finalize photo/video consent forms - we will get some updated pictures and videos posted.  Also - my goal is to have weekly updates on the curriculum so that you can follow along!

We are so thankful for the kind donations that came to us through @DonorsChoose and the generosity and kindness of both friends and strangers that provided us with the Green Screen production studio, iPad, and iPad stand for us to utilize in creating!  +Doink Support  - your green screen app continues to be an asset in our classroom!

Enjoy!

So Much For One Post!

February has come and almost gone -

and in that time your students have completed their real-word problem solving projects.  The goal was to create a greenhouse that had to be 900 cubic feet.  The choice of dimensions were up to them.  After completing a complete process of design, critique, and justification - they were able to use the app +Doink  to present from an 'actual' greenhouse.  During the process - they got their first exposure to greenscreening and movie production.  At the end of this post you will find links to all completed projects.  Points were awarded for effort, diligence, and attitude.  I think it is safe to say the students really enjoyed this!

BUT - FIRST!

Coming in just 3 weeks will be our DC field trip -- SPREAD THE WORD -- and help us get there! We won't get a fully funded trip most likely - but we can definitely help these parents send students to a once in a lifetime experience!

January and Beyond!

Thank you ...
Thank you so much for those of you who have expressed your sympathy and condolences during this time of loss for my family -- your support means more than you will ever know --
Unfortunately - time stops for no one and the world keeps turning and that means our time is tick, tick, ticking away!

Coming Up!
Your $50 deposit for DC is due and the deposit check is being written!  Thank you to those of you who got that turned in for your kiddos - if you have not yet done so - please submit your payment and contact myself or Mrs. Benoy ASAP.  Because of the low number we have committing right now -- we are considering a date change -- please share the letters sent home and help us get that corporate sponsorship -- that is the only way we are going to be able to save you money and get this trip paid for - You have to help us out on this!

Also - https://funds.gofundme.com/dashboard/vah44txg/customize/details is the URL to share through email or text -- we have collected $67 of the almost $9,000 needed to make this a reality!  Please please please spread the word!

The river through Chicago in January
Experiences!
Last weekend while most of you were shoveling out - I was fortunate enough to get away to the Google N' More conference in Waukegan, Illinois.  It was a little chilly but not nearly as treacherus as here!  There were a lot of firsts...like seeing ice on the river, getting paid to present, and learning that one can ship presentation supplies to themselves cheaper than they can pay for another bag of luggage on a plane!!!
While I was there to present on 4 sessions - I had a 5th one free and you CANNOT be around such great teachers and not take away something!

New Stuff!
The newest thing I am implementing in our classroom is +Nearpod and it is awesome!  Ask your students about it (and if you are a teacher reading this - sign up for free and then get 5 other teachers to sign up for a free upgrade and Gold Status for 6 months!)

Another thing that I learned about was Reading Recs from SAS where the app will record miscues and score a student's lexile level without the teacher lifting a finger!  Talk about a time saver and a cool way to progress monitor students efficiently!

Third, - I am jumping with both feet and rewarding your students with hands-on experience with coding from +Code.org and a personal friend +Lionel Bergeron whom I met at the DEN Summer Institute!  Your students have access to continue their progress at home - all they need is your permission to do so!

Lastly - as of 12/31/2015 we have a new addition to the classroom!  Come check it out!

55 Gal - freshwater aquarium with many kinds of fish!

Finally- I promised your students that I would give them a reward that would prove to me you are checking the blog -- If you read this, have your student write me a note simply telling me their favorite color and they will earn pouncers.

As always, thank you for your continued support!
